Recornea and Angiodroid will compete in the Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC) Global Finals.
Both Italian companies are among the 100 start-ups, known collectively as the “Entrepreneurship World Cup 100 (EWC 100)” that advance to the next stage of the competition. They will join 100 start-ups from around the world competing for a share of US$1 million.

Recornea

Recornea is a medical technology company developing implants for treating cornea deformities. Its first focus is keratoconus a disease that causes cornea bulging and presents a market of $3B.
 “Our customers are people suffering from cornea deformities. The primary use of our product is to reshape deformed corneas which improves vision and stops progression of the disease”, says Kakanga MosesCSO and Co-founder of Recornea.

Angiodroid

Angiodroid developed the only automatic injector for CO2 angiography validated on the market, with fully patented technology, which allows better diagnostic results, and freedom to operate validation.
“Our idea is to grow the company in the next few years in an important way for the listing on the stock exchange or for the sale to a major company in the sector. So, the question is how to scale up? We have two projects to accelerate growth: the first is the creation of a direct sales network in the major European countries. The second is access to the US and China markets.” said Sebastiano Zannoli, CEO & founder of Angiodroid.

Entrepreneurship World Cup

The Entrepreneurship World Cup is one of the world’s largest and most diverse pitch competitions and support programs for the next generation of entrepreneurs. Since launching in 2019, EWC has supported more than 300,000 participants from 200 countries, awarded $2 million in cash prizes and provided in-kind support and services valued at $150 million.

In 2021, 100,000 registrations were received from 200 countries. One thousand start-ups pitched at National Finals organized and judged by local entrepreneurship organizations across six continents plus the Middle East. Recornea and Angiodroid won a top spot at Italy’s National Final in July, in the Early Stage and Growth category, respectively, organized by META Group.
The EWC 100 will compete for a share of US$1 million in cash prizes – US$500,000 for first place, $250,000 for second place and $100,000 for third place. Cash prizes of US$100,000 will also be awarded to the top-scoring start-ups in the idea stage and social enterprise categories.
The EWC 100 attended a virtual bootcamp on Oct. 10-11, hosted by the Entrepreneurship Centre at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, with experts on hand to help them hone their business and pitching skills. A second virtual component will take place in late October and the top 25 start-ups will advance to the final stage of the competition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at the Misk Global Forum (Nov. 17-18).
The EWC is hosted globally by the Misk Global Forum, Global Entrepreneurship Network and The Global Education & Leadership Foundation. It is supported by global partners including One Valley, Entrepreneurs’ Organization, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, GAN and Comcast NBCUniversal LIFT Labs.
The Global Finals will be held on the heels of Global Entrepreneurship Week (Nov. 8-14), when 40,000 events and activities will take place in 180 countries to inspire and empower entrepreneurs.

Meet the winners of the European Social Innovation Competition 2019, run by the European Commission

A Spanish start-up that is transforming organic waste into biodegradable bioplastic (VEnvirotech); a Czech company that is applying the principles of circular economy to daily use packaged products (MIWA); and a spraying solution based on natural, sustainable and edible ingredients that can be applied on numerous foodstuffs for better conservation developed in Portugal (SpraySafe).

The three projects mentioned above have, at least, three things in common:

1- They are fighting single-use plastic with an innovative solution;

2- They believe in social entrepreneurship as a technique for business while helping to improve the world and solve social problems;

3- They have been awarded with a €50,000 prize by the European Commission for winning the Social Innovation Competition.

What is the European Social Innovation Competition?

The European Social Innovation Competition was launched in memory of social innovation pioneer Diogo Vasconcelos and is run by the European Commission across all EU Member States and H2020 Associate Countries.

Last Thursday, October 24, the 10 finalists presented their projects at an awards ceremony held in Brussels.

We want to make Europe the first climate neutral continent, whilst protecting industries. That’s why you social innovators are so important – you show us that growth and job creation go hand in hand with sustainability,” said Timo Pesonen, Director of the General Directorate for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW).

Each year the Competition focuses on a different issue facing Europe; like job creation (2012, 2014), reception and integration of refugees (2016) or empowering young people in a changing economy (2018). This year, its seventh edition, the focus was on one of the environmental problems that is affecting the world: challenging plastic waste.

In addition to the three winners, among the finalists we saw several other interesting projects like the Italian ReciclaGaMe, which aims to eco-sustainably degrade polyethylene through Galleria Mellonella, a larva that eats plastic and produces silk! See the finalists projects selected.

A big congratulation and thanks to all the participants for fighting #plasticwaste. This battle requires a joint effort!

There are 11 different culture and creativity challenges waiting for your solution. You have until March 30th to submit your proposal. What are you waiting for?

The Culture and Creativity Club is a contest set up by the University of Macerata and CreaHUB, UniMC’s Atelier of Ideas, in collaboration with META Group and the Symbola Foundation. Through a challenge-based platform, 11 innovative ideas will be awarded for responding to specific challenges in the cultural and creative sector.
Culture and Creativity Club is the latest version of META’s Innovation Platform, following the successful pilot Social Challenges. Through a dedicated digital platform it is possible to launch challenges and find original and innovative solutions to urban problems. In this way ideas can turn into new business opportunities. The winners of the challenges will benefit from mentoring support to bring their idea to the market.
The selected solutions will take part in a 10-module mentoring programme to help structure the business idea and launch their product/service on the market. This training will be provided by META Group experts. The winners will then get in contact with the companies that proposed the challenges, and they’ll have the opportunity to start a collaboration with them.
As its names suggests, the Culture and Creativity Club focuses on solving the problems of Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI). CCIs have difficulties in accessing credit and lack resources to enhance their competitiveness on the global market, build effective partnerships, and extend their activity to other countries. Also, CCIs represent an innovative branch of business and have the potential to increase regional competitiveness and job creation capacity.
CCI industries include architecture and design, which integrate creative elements into wider processes, as well as subsectors such as graphic design, fashion design or advertising.
